Frankie was born in Cocula Jal. Mexico. His family moved to the United States at the age of 12 and began his boxing career. When he was a sophomore in high school, he finished third in the national junior Olympic boxing tournament earning him a two week trip to the Olympic training center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He moved up to the number two junior ranking in his weight division as a result of his performance at the two week camp. He finished his amateur career with an overall record of 55 wins and 5 losses.
